Creating New Magic Tricks With Old Tricks

By Matthew Wong

New magic tricks are easily created by giving some twists to some classic magic tricks or principles. Take the old appearing handkerchief in decanter trick as an example. This could be converted into a new trick by substituting props other than those used in the original version. A milk bottle could be used instead of the conventional decanter. Or a whiskey bottle. Use a necktie in place of the handkerchief, or even a small collapsible snake. Or combine the milk bottle, alone, with any vanish of a flag, a handkerchief or a piece of silk wearing apparel-even a brassiere or a pair of panties.

New tricks have been "invented" with less evidence of originality than the substitution of the milk bottle for the decanter in this example. The same principle of using the thread to pull an object into view is demonstrated in Orrin's Spider Web Trick.

Notice that the thread is still used but that the background of the web helps to conceal both the thread and the pocket from which the card slides. Another important difference is that the movement of the thread is accomplished indirectly by spinning the web. That spider web trick is identical in basic principle to the old decanter trick. But Orrin substituted a card for the handkerchief. He substituted a disc decorated as a spider's web in place of the table. The thread remained.

Another important change made to the tricks is the pulling method. Originally the thread is pulled by an assistant or a counter weight. But Orrin improved the pulling by incorporating the action into another flourish action which is turning the table. The turning of the table also helped in concealing the path of the card. So the effect becomes like this: the magician display a spider figure on a web. He then turns the web and the chosen card mysteriously appears at the mouth of the spider.

We are not saying that the magician Orrin created the effect by substituting the objects like that. We are just illustrating how this principle can be used to produce an innovative effect from an old trickery.

Consider the steps in outline form: 1. The objects are changed-a card for a handkerchief, a spider for a decanter. 2. The place of appearance was changed in character. The original location was inside a transparent object. 3. The source of power was changed. Originally it came from a concealed assistant. Here the performer himself applied the Power-indirectly. 4. Instead of moving the appearing object rapidly, Orrin moves the place of appearance rapidly. 5. Absence of a suitable background originally made it necessary to do the trick at a distance. Here, a background that made the thread invisible moved the trick much closer to the spectator.

From the spectators' point of view, the two magic performance maybe very different. But in fact, they use the very similar principle in substance. - 621

A Few Points To Remember When You Buy Chess Boards

By Tomasz Alemany

Even if your first chess set was a gift or something you found at a garage sale you will probably eventually buy chess boards. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but someday you will find the perfect chess board and buy it. You might buy a board as a gift for another chess player. You might buy a board because the one you have isn't suitable for tournament play.

One of the handiest boards to have is a roll up vinyl board of the type used in tournaments. You can get them in a variety of colors and sizes. Tournaments usually require that the squares on the board be between 2 and 2.5 inches. This means that board could be 20 by 20 inches.

This size may be a little to large for casual games in places not dedicated to chess play. Vinyl boards can be purchased in smaller sizes including the 12 inch "analysis size." These boards can be purchased very inexpensively are, durable and easy to clean.

It's important that the playing pieces be the right size for the board. If you buy the board and the pieces as a set your problem is probably solved. However if you buy them separately you can make sure the combination is esthetically pleasing by observing some simple rules. Make sure the squares are big enough that the pieces can be moved easily without bumping into each other.

On the other hand they should not be so small that they are difficult to see or they look insignificant on the board. The base of the King is what is normally measured. One general rule is to add half an inch to the base of the king to get the size of the square.

That's a very general guide and t doesn't work if the pieces are of a peculiar design which involves the top being wider than the base. If you are using elaborately carved pieces with costumes and weapons that stand out you will need a more spacious board.

Chess players are sometimes so unwilling to leave their chess practice to go out into the sunlight people begin to suspect them of being vampires. If your family has a player who is starting to look like the stereotypical pale, feeble chess nerd you may want to invest in the giant outdoor chess set. The nine foot square nylon "board" can be spread out on any flat surface. The playing pieces are 25 inches high. They can be opened and made extra heavy by filling with sand or water. Your chess fanatic can get a healthy looking tan and build some muscles without loosing a moment of chess time. - 621
