The Benefits Of Chess For Children

By John Skelly

Scientific research and investigations conducted on pupils aged 16 - 19 showed that playing chess is conducive for developing not only disciplined mental habits but also interactive skill in dealing with peers. The result of enhanced cognition invariably resulted in better performance in school

There is no reason to expect chess for children to have any different results for younger people. On the contrary, encouraging children to play chess starting at a young age is conducive to directing their thinking habits in the right direction early on in life.

Spatial logic is one of the traits that are developed or enhanced by chess for children. This is the power to think in terms of physical reality. The location of things is an important consideration for people used to thinking visually or spatially. In a way this way of thinking could be interpreted as common sense. It is giving appropriate precedence to what is closer or more easily available and ignoring completely what is not within reach in solving problems. Spatial intelligence teaches people to recognize and work with what they have and not to indulge in wishful thinking or miss identifying personal potentials that one can use for advancement.

Another beneficial trait which can learned through chess for children is thinking in terms of numbers. A chess player needs to be constantly aware of the number of resources he has still available. Since the number of chess pieces he still has on the board is important for winning the game, the chess player understands the significance for the whole of every single one of its parts. In layman's terms this might be called 'respecting the cent.' And again, this is one of the desirable attitudes that can help people manage their own finances later on.

Administrative skills and independent thinking are two things that are closely related and these two are among the lessons that children stand to learn by playing chess for children. The importance of finding your own purposes and of motivating yourself to succeed are inculcated by playing chess. Together with these, the habit of approaching problems logically is thrown in with the package. And these are traits that people who strive for administrative positions should have.

Because chess for children will develop logical power, it will eventually result in self-confidence and esteem and the ability to sustain productive social relationships. Playing chess eventually gives one the willingness to learn from others, to recognize one's mistakes and recognize the good things others do. These are qualities needed for advancement in society.

As a result of acquiring the good traits mentioned above, the academic and social performance of the students in school were seen to improve. This is an indication that chess for children develops not only intelligence quotients but also emotional quotients. It teaches kids how to be gallant losers on the one hand and how not to be discouraged by defeat on the other hand.

At the same time, this kind of entertainment will cost nearly nothing at all since chess games can be played on the internet itself. - 621

Is There An Increase In Women Playing Chess

By John Skelly

It is from the FIDE (Federacion Internationale des Echecs), anglicized as the World Chess Organization, that we can get the most reliable figures pertaining to chess players and their rankings.

In the records of this organization may be seen figures relating to the top chess players in the world and the countries predominating the game. Also reflected in their charts are statistics for total male and female aficionados and top rated male and female players. The FIDE uses a special ratings scheme known as the Harkness ratings chart to designate the skill level of chess players worldwide. To have some kind of status with the FIDE a player should have scored at least 22.7% against an opponent with an average rating of 1,850 in an eleven round tournament. This gives the player the minimum C rating of 1,600.

In brief, the number of women listed by FIDE who have qualified themselves into the ratings chart was 3,592 in 2004. the number more than doubled in 2008 with 7,826 female players making into the ratings chart.

Taking it from another point of view, if we examine FIDE ratings for top n women players in the world we see a similar tendency for statistics to increase. From July, 2000 to April, 2008 FIDE listed the top 50 women players in the world. From July, 2008 to May, 2010 we find the statistics representing the top 100 women players in the world. This effectively means that the number of women players who have reached prominence in the game has increased by more or less double.

The ranking in the Harkness scale of female players has also been steadily on the rise. However, it has never gone beyond the level of Senior Master. In July, 2000 the average figure was 2,444 increasing by 33 points in April, 2008 at 2,477.

Naturally we expect the value of the average rating to decrease when the sampling is increased by 100 %. Although there was a decrease in the average rating of 44 points (down to 2,433 from 2,477), the trend after that has also been steadily on the rise for the rest of the table provided by FIDE.

The May, 2010 rating (2442) is apparently incomplete since it is less than the March rating (2443) by 1 unit.

Interpreting the trends, there is a good chance that we shall be seeing the average rating per 100 female players equal the average rating recorded in 2000 for 50 female players. This means that were we to take a sampling based on 50 players today, we should expect to get even higher average skill ratings for women.

The numbers, if accurate, may well indicate that not only is there a rise in the number of female chess players, but also that the percentage of this population which has attained a distinctive status in the world of this game is also on the rise.

However, the chart indicates that women have stagnated at the level of Senior Master for a long time. Or is this just because the samplings have been increased from 50 individuals to 100? Whatever misgivings we may have about the figures, the fact remains. Women are invading the traditionally male world of chess. - 621

Is Internet Chess Replacing Face To Face Chess

By John Skelly

For so many reasons, people prefer to play chess online rather than OTB (over the board) chess. By the way, OTB chess is playing across a real table from a live opponent.

The live chess clubs themselves are seeing the advantages of hosting their own websites for the purpose of better coordinating with their members and also for allowing members to convene virtually. The websites allow the moderators of the chess clubs to offer additional services to their members as well as to host tournaments inexpensively. By exposing their club on the web, they make it easy for people to become members and to follow the activities of the club without leaving their homes.

Another thing that is attractive about playing chess online is the prospect of meeting new people from all over the world and establishing good friendships with them. This sort of broadens the knowledge and experience of the player because he gets to learn the playing secrets of people who live halfway across the globe. The possibility of discovering new techniques is very attractive to serious chess players.

Being able to play chess without leaving your bedroom is another convenience that most persons like to take advantage of. Oftentimes, the only available hours people have for recreation are after office or after school. Having to leave the house again just after arriving home just to play chess is inconvenient for most people. People want to relax by playing the game and they won't be able to do that if they have to drive all the way to the club to do so.

For those who want to learn to play the game, whatever their current skill rating is, internet chess clubs are the best resources. Members can usually avail of the whole range of lessons for making them proficient in playing the game. The person can start with the basics or proceed to the more difficult skill levels of the game. Additionally some sites offer the chance to practice with programmed chess robots.

This is excellent preparation for facing real opponents over the internet. And since human-to-human games may sometimes be played with stakes, a person should train well before attempting to play them.

Beginning chess players normally find playing chess online much better for learning how to focus on the game. And then there are those players who are easily distracted by a crowd of onlookers, peering over their shoulders and mumbling incoherently. Internet games provide these types of people with the privacy that they need to play the game effectively.

There may also be experts who visit online chess clubs occasionally or who are permanent members there. This gives other members an excellent chance of learning from these gurus.

However, in the face of the huge number of people playing chess online, the traditional way OTB chess has always been played will not likely be entirely replaced by internet chess. Even if online chess games get to simulate the real game to a greater degree in the future with internet chess players whisking hologram chess pieces across a glass chessboard, face-to-face chess will most probably still be the preferred way to conduct international tournaments being the most transparent mode of play. - 621

What Is The Attraction To Playing Chess

By John Skelly

Finding the attraction for people of playing chess games will mean knowing the characteristics of the game itself. In this way, we can appreciate those reasons better.

Chess is a game where little is left to chance. And the only kind of chance happening that can influence its outcome will be the chance that one player is not aware of possible moves that his opponent will make. Otherwise, with equal skill on both sides, the chess games often resolves in a stalemate.

However, deliberately planned moves characterize how players play chess games. The need to coordinate one's moves with the position of the pieces on the board is paramount for success. The role of the mind in this game outweighs the role of chance, unlike other games where the results are mostly left to the roll of dice.

Secondly, because it is not a game of chance, the player controls his own destiny. It will only be through being unaware of options open to the opponent that one can lose the game.

Playing chess games requires intense mental application. The capacity for focusing, analyzing and remembering are important to win this game. Continuous reassessment of the status of the board is needed.

Fourthly, in playing chess games, the player's ability to remember his options will be crucial to winning the game. The power of the mind to create and retain alternative plans of action is necessary. And then the ability to store these procedures in the brain makes sure that the player can deliver the right action within the limit of time he has to make it.

In fifth place we have the fact that emotional capacity to respond to challenge and to constantly play to win the game are paramount for anyone aspiring to win in chess.

From all the attributes of the chess games mentioned we can identify reasons for wanting to play it.

People who like games that give them a great amount of control like playing chess. These will be people with realistic mind-sets. Included in this group will be professionals and businessmen who, even during their leisure time like to hone their logical powers. Playing chess is also one way of getting logic back into the thinking process. Sometimes the helter-skelter of modern life bounces the mind of the right track. Chess is one way to get back on the tracks.

People who like taking responsibility for their actions love to play chess games. The game is all about being responsible for your actions. At the same time, this implies that all moves should be well thought of. In this group you will have those who like managing and running things. Playing chess is one good way to improve their insight into issues. Not a few people derive inspiration for real solutions to real problems as they play chess.

People who want to hone their memory rentention are also motivated to play the game

Playing chess games is also the favorite pastime of people who like to be challenged and for people who want to learn how not to get discouraged and how to persist in striving for goals against all odds. - 621

Is Internet Chess Replacing Face To Face Chess

By John Skelly

Playing chess online, like so many other things that people now do online, has gained in popularity over OTB (over the board) chess. That, by the way, is another way to call a live chess game.

Not all people who want to play chess want to leave home to do it. Although there are live chess clubs, these organizations are aware of this dislike that people have for going out of the house just after they have arrived. Most of these clubs will have websites so that any member who wishes to play chess can simply log in and compete with other members who are on the site. These websites make it so much easier to coordinate with their members and to conduct tournaments without too much expense.

Playing chess online allows aficionados to remain at home while playing the game at the same time. This is especially convenient when they feel like playing chess just after arriving home from work or the school. Since the objective of most people will be to relax while playing the game, internet chess offers the perfect setting for that purpose.

Playing chess online is also desirable for newcomers who may find it difficult to focus during their first few games. Online chess is also suitable for people who can't concentrate in the presence of a crowd, some of whom may be peering over his shoulder and possibly muttering things. People who focus better in private prefer to play internet chess.

If member of online chess clubs wish to get advice from experts, they are usually given the opportunity to do so.

In spite of the popularity of playing chess online, it is not likely that it will result in a complete phase-out of traditional ways to play chess. The opposite may even come true. Online chess games may get to simulate live chess games so much that we shall be seeing ourselves directing hologram queens to devour hologram rooks suspended over a glass chessboard. OTB chess will likely remain the only reasonably transparent way to conduct international chess tournaments. - 621

What Is The Attraction To Playing Chess

By John Skelly

The reasons for the universal attraction that playing chess games has for people can best be pinpointed by examining the nature of the game itself. From those peculiarities of the game the factors that lead people to select this game can be deduced.

The first characteristic of chess games is that very little is left to the influence of chance. Although chance is not altogether absent from the determining the outcome of the game it only figures in when people are not aware of the implications of their moves on the outcome of the game. And since no one, not even computer robots can accurately see all the possible developments that the game can take, victory is never a sure thing.

You need great mental focus to play chess games. The kind of focus, moreover, is involved with the entire board. Gathering all the data retrieved by the eyes and consolidating their implications is important for winning the game. And this has to be done constantly in the course of the game.

Excellent power of memory retention are also advantageous for chess games to be won. The capacity to create and store different approaches to the play and to apply one approach when needed is necessary in chess.

And then, the player should be undaunted by challenge and should persist in trying to win the game. The nature of chess is such that tables can be turned by a single move.

From all the attributes of the chess games mentioned we can identify reasons for wanting to play it.

People who like games that give them a great amount of control like playing chess. These will be people with realistic mind-sets. Should Your Child Join A Chess Club

By Alexa Dermont

Conducive interaction with their peers and participation in activities that help develop both mind and emotions are what children engage in when they join chess clubs. The type of recreation that can be enjoyed in chess clubs is well balanced combination of fun and intelligent pursuits.

Scientific investigation conducted under regulated conditions and done in various parts of the globe have come up with identical results, all of which point to the fact that playing chess is beneficial not only for mental and emotional development in children, but especially for acquiring mental discipline.

Likewise, the habit of thinking for themselves is developed and with this, the capability for solving problems on their own. As an offshoot of being self-driven and independent, children tend to attain to a high level of self-esteem. This, in turn, leads to confidence in dealing with other people and forming productive friendships with peers.

Regularly engaging in chess games has helped children as young as 6 or 7 years of age improve their comprehension of situations and their ability to express themselves. Among older children, similar results have been noted. It is especially in habitual under-achievers that playing chess has shown dramatic improvement in academic performance.

A very important mental ability that playing chess regularly can nourish in children is spatial intelligence. This is also called visual intelligence. Those are really just technical sounding names for a higher level of common sense. The child who plays chess regularly is able to identify which chess pieces on the board should be given the priority to move depending on its location. In other words, spatial intelligence in reasoning in terms of the physical location of objects. It is the ability to organize and move pieces on a chess board to achieve the player's objective. This is one very important practical skill that can be very helpful in daily life.

This skill is important for being able to resolve situations in life in a practical and economical manner.

With the rising popularity of doing everything on the internet, chess clubs have likewise gone that direction. Children can now join chess clubs without having to leave their homes. They can join clubs that are not even located in their town, city or country. In this way they get to broaden their vision of life, meet and make friends with people from across the globe, all of whom pursue the same interest in chess.

Internet chess clubs not only host tournaments, but they also have classes in chess for those who want to improve their skills in the game. The member can select any level of the game to study so long as he is already proficient in all the previous level. The frequency and schedule of classes is entirely left up to the member most of the time. There may be some timeframes but these will usually be loosely applied. The sessions themselves will be more in the style of interactive discussions centering on the topic broached by the moderator. Once in a while electronic manuals may be distributed. Because all this is done in the comfort of home, the chances for the child being able to focus well on the topic are very great.

The classes won't really be lectures but moderated discussions with some distribution of electronic study material. Being done entirely in the house, the child can maximize focusing on the subject matter and learn to play chess well quickly. Lots of grandmasters started as kids. In fact, it is highly recommended by educators for stimulating the mental and psychological growth of children that they should play chess. - 621

What Is The Future For The Game Of Chess

By John Skelly

In our times, there has been a shift in the attention of chess lovers from watching grandmaster vs. machine matches to watching chess-playing computers compete against each other to win a set of games. Formerly, people were eager to see who played chess better, whether machines or humans. The change in attitude comes in the wake of the fact that machines consistently won against the best grandmasters in recent chess games.

Recently Vladimir Kramnik conceded to a machine named Fritz v 1.0. In the wake of that and similar developments in the past, conducting these competitions seem to be besides the point. Computers have a vast listing of possible moves that can be made in chess games. They can traverse these alternative courses of action in seconds. On the other hand, humans do not have all the possibilities clearly stored in their conscious minds. They have to arrive at them by painstaking analysis and they will not probably be able to come up with a million alternative moves.

Chess is actually ideal for programming into a computer. The only difficulty to be hurdled is the amount of memory available for massive computations and the speed of the computer itself. These things are no longer difficult to have with modern technology. When computers think they do nothing else but that, unlike humans who are subject to all kinds of distractions. Those are the factors that make computers better chess players than humans.

In addition to this, more improvements are being planned for chess-playing machines. The updates will be in terms of trying to cover the entire gamut of game possibilities possible in the playing algorithm. This will involve building machines with lightning fast speeds and almost limitless capacities for data storage.

The interest of grandmasters in the techniques of machines in playing chess games has been aroused. Experts are studying the machines' style of playing chess in an effort to gain further insight into the secrets of playing the game.

However, the future of chess for humans is by far not dim. In fact, the development of chess-playing machines may lead to better techniques for playing the game. The only change in the status of the game for humans is that for human beings, chess has become less a game to win than a game to learn from.

The findings in favor of chess for education are based on studies conducted independently by educators around the world. The results are all similar in concluding that playing chess games regularly develops positive mental and psychological traits in people.

For instance, playing chess improves the apprehension of the significance of distances in logic. The accessibility of things determines their importance for certain objectives. This is also plainly referred to as 'common sense', a facility for which not all people have.

Administrative skills are also enhanced by chess games because chess players need to coordinate the movement of all their pieces on the board to win the game. Reasoning with accurate logic is another good thing that a chess player can possess.

While programmers and their robots will determine how much more we can learn about the game, the real future significance of chess games lies in their potential for becoming an educational tool for preparing the minds and emotions of people to reach what may possibly be brighter horizons ahead. - 621

Why Do People Play Chess

By John Skelly

Different age groups and people with varying temperaments play chess board games for different purposes. Some people play chess to spend the time productively while maintaining mental alertness, others do so to relax, others play because they like the way the game is structured. There are also professional players who play to win. Still another category of players to so for mental and psychological development.

Retired people who have plenty of free time, prefer to play thinking games. In this way, they can have fun and excitement and at the same time practice mental alertness. There is something about playing chess that stimulates the logic of the mind as well as its capability for visualization.

Many people also find chess board games very relaxing and stress-relieving. The prospect of engaging in something over which you have complete control and which will show the results of your efforts in a short time is often a welcome change after work. Conditions in the work place are not always controllable and issues can persist for days and months. Chess is a way for people who experience being out of control to feel in control again. The clear logic of the game is a refreshing change after spending the whole day dealing with illogical people and circumstances at work.

There is also the group of people who are aficionados of chess board games. These are persons who love the game for the way the rules are structured and for the way the game reminds one of the days of monarchy. These will usually be culture buffs who might have a collection of books about chess at home. Their knowledge and familiarity with the most renowned games ever played will be exhaustive. And they may also play the game more than just reasonably well. Their homes will probably have old and valuable chess sets.

Similar, but not quite the same as the aficionados, you have professionals who play chess as a career. Such persons not only love the game as a hobby but also have exceptional powers of visual logic that allow them to reproduce the board, the positions of the pieces and work out the possible moves in their minds. A part of this kind of ability is having a photographic memory by which the mind's eye can examine and interpret a vivid image of the board in the head. This facility is also found in some performing musicians who can retain a clear image of a musical score in the mind's eye.

And last, but not least, you have the young children who play chess with the guidance of their teachers. Because chess board games have so much to teach a person about the correct way of reasoning, it has become a part of the education of children in most advanced societies to learn how to play chess board games. - 621

Is Chess Good For Children

By John Skelly

There are many good reasons why children should be taught to play chess.

Investigative research conducted by scientists show the game to be an effective way to improve the mental and emotional make-up of children. It helps children to get a better grasp of any situation and as a consequence of this enhanced comprehension, children are able to respond to any situation in the most economical way; neither doing too much nor too little. As a result of this proficiency, the self-esteem of children is boosted and along with this the quality of their interaction with other people.

Children who play this game develop motivation to face and respond to challenges. This mind-set also corrects the tendency to be discouraged and to stop trying to achieve goals.

Because there are no real under-achievers and poor performance is usually just a result of being mentally under-developed, under-achievers who habitually play chess show improvement of thinking power after some time.

As an instrument for developing the ability to think and make decisions independently, chess is incomparable with anything else. Children who play chess realize how one should be responsible for one's actions and that part of being responsible is to reflect carefully on what the best plan will be.

Bering a highly reciprocal game, chess teaches the necessity for making adequate responses to the actions of other people. In this way it nurtures the habit of responding to other people appropriately and is excellent preparation for creating and maintaining productive associations.

Because to play chess well, a great deal of concentration and comparative analysis is involved, these characteristics become enhanced in those who enjoy chess regularly.

As a result of wanting to be responsible, children will also want to discipline their actions so that their actions will be exactly appropriate for the ends desired, no more, no less. The frugality of the game rubs off on its players.

Because of the need to empathize with the opponent, children who play chess nurture their self-awareness or the ability to refer to their own psychology to guess what other people might be planning to do. This is something one needs to do quite frequently in real life.

Visual or spatial intelligence is enhanced in children who play the game. In simple terms this is 'common sense.' Because practical reasoning based on the correct apprehension of facts is what makes for a winning game of chess, this is nurtured in the players.

Retentive memory is among the many good contributions that to play chess can give to children. This hones the ability to keep different plans of action in reserve in the mind, and using the most appropriate one when needed.

Naturally, if by playing the game conscientiously, all those characteristics grow in a child, he will very probably perform better in his academic subjects as well as in resolving practical problems

Finally, because chess is not a game of chance, children develop a desire not to leave things to chance. They form the habit of setting goals, studying how to achieve those goals and persisting in their pursuit. - 621

Is There A Common Personality Type For Chess Players

By John Skelly

Because the motives of different people for becoming chess players may vary you cannot way that any one type of person will probably like playing the game.

For one, retired citizens often become chess players. The game gives them something that is not physically straining to do and yet gives them the mental boost that, at their age, they are sorely in need of. Others will devote themselves to solving crossword puzzles or knitting jackets for their pets.

You also have the scholar chess players who love the game for its history and the theories on which the rules of the game are based. These are the sort of people who would write a book extolling the artistic way in which the game was created. They will probably own a fabulous chess set on which they repeatedly play famous chess routines. The movement of the pieces is like dance or music to them.

Next you have the people who play chess professionally. These have graduated from chess clubs and participated in local chess tournaments which they survived with flying colors. Professional chess players play to win. In order to achieve this objective, they will spend a lot of time studying the classic moves of famous chess masters and perhaps in devising their own variations of those moves or creating their own style of playing.

Other chess players do so to remind themselves that the world is still sane. These will be the professionals and the businessmen who have to put up with so much lack of mental discipline in their peers and subordinates that they need a good round of chess moves to think straight again. It is probably the fondest wish of such persons that all their associates would play chess once in a while.

Then there are the mentally energetic chess players who love the challenge that playing chess presents. These people are the aficionados of chess who will probably play with the same opponent many times, each one trying to beat the other as many times as possible. Alternatively they will join chess clubs and local tournaments. From this group of people come future professional chess grandmasters.

Lately, even teenagers and younger children have taken up playing chess, not as a hobby, but as part of their school curriculum. Educators have recognized the importance of the internal qualities that playing chess can give the individuals who frequently do so. That opinion is well supported by results of carefully monitored studies conducted independently of each other by educators around the globe. All findings corroborate one another in concluding that the effect of playing chess in developing the minds of young people can be dramatic, especially in the case of habitual under-achievers.

It is clear that playing chess is not a predisposition that belongs to any one personality type. You will see people with different temperaments, social/economic rankings, professions and ages playing chess habitually. This is because the game has many things to offer to people who know how to look for them in the game. Any good habit related to thinking properly and facing challenges can be learned by playing chess constantly. - 621

Have You Ever Thought About Collecting Civil War Toy Soldiers? Here's Why You Should

For more than the past 2000 years, toy soldiers have been the prized possessions of little boys the world over. Children love to stage make believe battles and wars on their bedroom floors or kitchen tables. Boys have always had considerable fascination with soldiers and armies alike.

Small human forms have been used to teach from the beginning of time. Mothers of the early ages have used dolls to instruct their daughters about the proper way to care for babies and their families. Boys were taught about hunting wild beasts by small carved animals created by their fathers and uncles. This type of education provides a quick and safe way of learning, improving the entire population. There is proof that the famous Roman Legionnaires were taught with toy soldiers.

The instructional toys of man have changed as he has. Simple warriors and hunters of prehistory have grown to more modern toys. There still is a fascination with armed struggle and military miniatures are as popular as ever. Army men have been a source of study for their uniforms and supplies as well as the battle they fought. Collecting or even playing with these tiny armies and the lore of war will entertain men of all ages for hours on end.

Pair this with the American fascination of the Civil War and you have an amazing field of collecting. There are civil war toy soldiers and items you can buy that are representative of famous battles of that great conflict. Weather you are a American history collector or a battle strategist, nothing can compare with the thrill of collecting civil war toy soldiers.

You want war? Pick your favorite battle: Vicksburg, Bull Run, or the major turning point of the war, Gettysburg. You can find collectible civil war toy soldiers to outfit your company and engage in your own battle. You may even change the course of history this time!

Collect an entire regiment, troops, wagons, horses, houses, fences you can find everything needed to equip an army, even zouaves. Toy soldiers are to be found from the North as well as the South representing real units from the war. You can find the great generals of that conflict: from the South, Lee, Jackson and Pickett and from the North, Grant, Sherman and Sheridan.

Since the War Between The States happened in the mid 1800s, the market for antique civil war toy soldiers is very strong. They are in high demand making them very expensive and still commanding high prices. These valuable civil war toy soldiers were usually hand painted and cast from lead.

Plastic army men and toy soldiers have replaced the lead soldier of the past. Collectors can purchase these plastic toy soldiers models painted or unpainted in the raw. This allows you to decide what army you want your fighting man to join. If you paint a riding horseman grey and give him a sash with a great coat, he could be from the famous First Virginia Cavalry. Blue paint on the same figure could make him an officer in the Ohio 3rd Cavalry unit.

Collecting civil war toy soldiers can be a joyful and educational learning experience for both the armchair general marching off to war with his tiny armies or the American historian making battle scenes no matter how old or young they happen to be. Just make sure you don't tell them they are learning anything, let's keep it a secret. - 621

The Benefits Of Playing Chess

By John Skelly

Chess is practically a simulation of life itself. This is because it is a game which needs the player not only to focus on one object but on coordinating the movement of all the chess pieces under his control. It is the strategy game par excellence and that is why a lot of mental and psychological benefits can be derived from playing chess.

Focusing on their jobs is something that the staff or employees in a company are instructed to do. This is to ensure maximum efficiency and productivity on their part. They are not to be concerned with anything else but what they are suppose to be doing. In a company, the manager is tasked with coordinating the activities of each and every one of the employees to successfully run the business process.

Playing chess is like taking on the role of an administrator. The player is completely free to make his own choices. At the same time, he should base his selected moves on the current configuration of the chess board. A high degree of understanding is involved in forecasting the possible consequences of a move based on how the pieces are distributed. This understanding requires being able to identify which pieces on the board can achieve a specific objective and in how many moves it might take the piece to do it. This need to plan and coordinate movement is very good for developing administrative skills

In playing chess, the player needs also to study the configuration of the enemy's pieces and, based on that, to predict what the tactics of the enemy might be. This involves plunging into a vast sea of possibilities and probabilities, not different to those that confront us in real life. The possible moves of the enemy should be identified and the more probably ones deduced in order to make his own counter moves whether they be aggressive or defensive. In short, he has to be able to assess to some degree what the opponent's next move is going to be. The skill of anticipating the action of others is something we need to learn. That is another good reason for playing chess.

None of the above activities can be done without a high degree of concentration and mental effort. Additionally the knack for keeping distinct courses of action in different compartments in the brain will have to be developed. This is actually the habit of grouping our plans and organizing them into units bound together by the logic that will make it possible for each one to realize itself. The player chooses the option that is most favored by the arrangement of pieces on the board. This is undeniably one important ability people should have to achieve a certain amount of flexibility in life.

While playing chess, the comprehension of the player of the significance of physical distance in resolving problems is enhanced. This is called spatial intelligence and it plays an important role in making practicable decisions in life, decisions which are based on identifying what will probably work and what will probably not given the peculiar way factors are arranged in our lives.

Obviously, playing chess is something that people, especially growing and developing your people should be encouraged to do. - 621

Find Beauty At A Wooden Chess Set Online Store

By Vilkovo.eu Вилково

A chess set bought from a wooden chess set online store can provide years of enjoyment, whether you buy a collectors' item to showcase or a functional set to teach the children how to play. The natural beauty of wood provides long lasting beauty and pleasure, so why not play in style at a wooden chess set online store.

Wooden chess sets vary in size and intended use. Miniature magnetic sets and folding sets are good for travel purposes. Collectors' sets with delicate detail and intricate designs are showcase sets not intended for regular play. Wooden chess sets vary from plain and functional to detailed, intricate and precious. A wooden chess set board can vary in size from 12 inch folding boards to 21 inch tournament standard sized boards. If you are buying for your children, a 16 inch junior board accommodates shorter arm lengths.

A wooden chess set is usually made from two different types of wood to provide the two colors required for the pieces and the board. Pieces and board squares may match, or be bought separately in different woods. Maple, walnut, ebony, rosewood and sandalwood are among the more popular types of wood used to make wooden chess sets. The style of a wooden chess set can vary from plain to intricately carved or etched, with both the chess pieces and the board being decorated. Chess boards may vary in height and weight, and some include drawers for piece storage. Some wooden chess sets include a box or case for the pieces and/or board.

Wooden chess sets can be purchased as a set of chess pieces, a separate board and a case, or as a combination set which includes the board and pieces, sometimes with a case for the pieces. Often a wooden chess set combination will include a checkers set as well, great for family and casual use. Some combination sets include a backgammon board on the reverse of the chess or checkers board.

When you want to play in style at a wooden chess set online store, you will be offered many choices in terms of the style of chess pieces available. The most commonly used style is the Staunton chess piece, a practical, easy to use design that is the tournament standard worldwide. Detailed designs may appear more attractive, but they can be unstable, difficult to distinguish between pieces, and subject to more wear and tear than the less delicate designs. Staunton chess pieces are recommended for beginners as they are very well balanced, easy to handle and long lasting pieces.

A combination chess set can cost under $100, so it need not be expensive to play in style at a wooden chess set online store. Collectors' sets can vary between $400 and $800 dollars, with some of them commissioned by artists and sculptors. These are of course beautiful wooden chess sets, but perhaps not practical for everyday use. A wooden chess set can provide hours of entertainment and the natural beauty of wood will last many years. Invest a little more to purchase a family heirloom set that will be appreciated for generations, or buy a functional combination set for family fun. - 621

Settlers Of Catan Review

By Erin Walker

Settlers of Catan, is a board game that never seems to grow old. I've played it many times and it's definitely my favorite game. One nice feature of Settlers, is that it's competitive but not in a brutal way. Unlike games that cause people to become overly competitive and mad, Settlers of Catan keeps people engaged but not angry.

Perhaps one of the best things about Settlers is the way each game is completely different. Unlike games like Monopoly and Life, the Settlers of Catan board actually changes each time you play. When you start a new game you can follow one of the many different board setups shown in the direction manual, or you can just make your own board, which is what I like to do. Of course, due to the uniqueness of the board, Settlers does take up a lot of time to set up, but it's worth it.

Another nice feature about Settlers is the amount of control you have. In games like Monopoly, Bingo, or Risk, almost everything really comes down to luck. While the resources you get are based on the roll of a dice in Settlers, everything else is dependent upon you. What you build, where you go and what you trade and with whom is not up to luck.

There are also different things that can be added onto the original Settlers of Catan game, such as Cities and Knights, and Seafarers. While Cities and Knights can bring out more vicious competition, it is tons more fun. Seafarers is also more exciting to play, but does not bring any additional competitiveness. Then there are extension packs that allow additional people to play, which I've used before.

Overall, Settlers of Catan is an amazing game. It never grows old and always keeps me engaged. I love playing it in a cozy home environment with friends and family. A safe home is the best place to play this fun game. There are many ways to keep a home safe, but the best way is to have a home security system. - 621
