Chess was once a game held in such high regard it was called the "Game of Kings." Chess sets were made of precious gems, designed by the finest artists for the highest of men. Today, it's a game on the computer held in the same regard as solitaire and minesweeper. Instead of using a chess set and sitting across from another player, we sit in a chair and use our mouse to play against the computer.

In the early 1980s there was a prediction that the invention of VCRs and video rental stores would put movie theaters out of business within ten years. And yet, cinemas continue to be built, and continue to draw people inside. Families, dating couples and even friends all go to the movie theater to see the latest blockbuster.

Sitting in a full audience, feeling the excitement crowd around you as you watch your movie and smelling the popcorn. These things can't easily be replaced by a home theater.

Every home has a television, if not more than one, and yet people still flock to see plays, ballets and concerts. In many cities people can go the theater and see a different play each week of the year.

And Sacramento is not exactly the mecca of the theater world. Why do audiences still attend live theater instead of being content with television and movies on DVD? They attend theater because they want to see living people on stage. There is an excitement to being part of an audience watching live actors one can't get from a tube.

We know that cars can move faster than any runner. But we still admire the gold medalists in track and field. There are machines that can pitch a baseball faster and more accurately than any major league pitcher, and I'm sure a batting machine could be engineered that could hit a ball farther than any baseball player.

But no one's going to pay money to watch their favorite machines play ball. No pitching machine is going to be anyone's hero. Humans admire the skills and achievements of fellow humans. We marvel and even take joy in those who show us what we as humans are capable of at our best.

Actors can deliver so much more with a single glance and smile than the most painstakingly rendered CGI or animated character. No matter how much we may enjoy laughing at Bugs Bunny, we will never admire him the way we do Meryl Streep or Robert DeNero.

Computers have been playing chess since the mid 80s, and can be useful when it comes to training. But they will never replace the feel of a chess set in your hands or the challenge of a real human being.

And we admire the winners, those with the best grasp of strategy (or brute calculations) because it was a human doing the calculating. Deep Blue will never earn the respect we give to players like Garry Kasparov. - 621

When your family has grown more in the game, you will be allowed to take more actions. This allows you to do things like get vegetables or animals for your farm.
