An Introduction to Backgammon and Dominoes

By Jake Stevens

With Christmas just around the corner, there are plenty of games you can play with the family to have some fun together - why not choose something traditional like Dominoes or Backgammon?

Here's a quick intro to both games.

Dominoes

Dominoes are small rectangular objects that feature a number of pips on each end - for the most common sets, up to six. These pips correspond to the roll of a die, and they can be used in a number of ways depending on the game you are playing. Generally speaking, there are 28 potential combinations of pairings of numbers when the dominoes are placed next to each other (including blanks).

When talking about one particular domino, you refer to it in terms of its number of pips, in ascending order. So for example, for a tile with 6 pips on one end and 2 on the other, it would be known as a "two, six".

The tiles are referenced in terms of 'heaviness' and 'lightness' with a 'six-six' being the heaviest and the double blank being the very lightest.

As in card games, each domino end will be a part of a suit. In the average set, there are 7 suits. The doubles only belong to a single suit, whereas the rest of the dominos belong to two.

The dominoes should always be shuffled before starting play, to make sure that everyone playing receives a random selection. This is done most easily by laying them all down face down on a table and moving them around the surface until they are all mixed up. Now you know the basics, you can find out how to play some of the many games for dominoes by searching for "All Fives", "Fortress", "Sebastopol" or "Solitaire".

Backgammon

A game for two people, Backgammon is very challenging, fun and perhaps one of the oldest board games still widely played today. Games typically don't last too long, so it's still a good one to enjoy with the family over the festive season.

There are many different terms used to refer to the pieces in this game, so for the sake of simplicity I will refer to them only as checkers.

The surface of the board is made up of 24 long triangles, or 'points', which are usually in alternating colours. The 24 are thought of in four groups, and for each player two of these groups are known as the home board and two the outer board, with this reversed for the opponent.

In between these two sides is a bar separating them, and for each opponent the triangles are numbered from left to right as 1 to 24. Again, this is is also the same for the opponent so from each perspective the triangles have different numbers.

Each player has 15 checkers each, and the game begins with these checkers been organised thus: 5 on each 6 point, 3 on each 8 point, 5 on each 13 point and 2 on each 24 point. Both players require a pair of dice and a doubling cube.

Collecting Civil War Toy Soldiers? It Is Great For Little And Big Boys Alike

By Glen Schmit

For over two millenia, army men and toy soldiers have held a special place in children's hearts. They enjoy making pretend battles of famous wars wherever thay find a place to set them up. Toy soldiers are a source of fascination and excitement with boy of all ages.

People have used small human figures as teaching aids forever. I am sure the first human mothers taught their daughters about raising babies and families with dolls. Males used miniature animals to educate their sons how to stalk and kill beasts in the wild. Using these aids allowed proper techniques to be transferred safely and quickly, with no risk to the hunter, improving the hunting success. The Roman Legionnaires were probably instructed in this same manner all of their lives.

As mankind has evolved with time, so have his educational playthings. The simple carved hunters and warriors of prehistoric history have given way to more evolved toys of a modern era. There has been a special fascination with toy soldiers and miniature armies throughout history. Collecting these military miniatures has never been more popular. These army men are classics and their uniforms and equipment are studied almost as much as the wars in which they fought. This love of collecting and the lore of war, can still have grown men playing around their tabletop battlefields or on their knees leading their tiny troops.

Pair this with the American fascination of the Civil War and you have an amazing field of collecting. There are civil war toy soldiers and items you can buy that are representative of famous battles of that great conflict. Weather you are a American history collector or a battle strategist, nothing can compare with the thrill of collecting civil war toy soldiers.

Of course you know this means war. Pick a fight and stand your ground: Vicksburg, Bull Run, or the most important battle of the civil war, Gettysburg. Find collectible civil war toy soldiers from both sides and fight for your chosen side. Let the South win for a change.

You can collect troops, cavalry, wagons, horses, field hospitals, just about anything a standing army would need, even volunteers. There are collectible toy soldier items from both sides of this bloody conflict, that identify the exact outfit they come from. If you want to collect famous generals, you can choose from either side: Grant, Sherman, Sheridan for the North and Lee, Jackson and Pickett from the South.

There is a strong market for antique civil war toy soldiers since the war was fought during the middle of the next too the last century. These antiques are very dear to collectors and their high prices reflect it. These usually lead antique civil war toy soldiers were painted by hand.

The modern, plastic toy soldier has taken over the collector's market these days. Plastic toy soldiers can be bought with or without being painted. You can paint your army men whatever colors you want to let you choose the side he will fight. Put a grey great coat, grey riding hat and sash and he becomes the leader of the First Virginia unit. Paint your horseman blue, and he could be an officer for the 3rd Ohio Cavalry.

Any way you look at the spirit of collecting them, playing armchair general or creating realistic dioramas, civil war toy soldiers can be a fascinating and educational hobby for boys of all ages. You probably don't want to tell them that they are learning something thought, they hate that.

Top 10 Christmas Presents For Families

By Owen Jones

What do people give for Christmas and are those gifts any different from thirty or forty years ago? Naturally, there are games around now that did not even exist thirty or forty years ago. In this article, I want to take a look at some of the most popular Christmas gifts of all time. They are not in any particular order, merely as they occur to me

Number 1: the number one desirable Christmas gift for sons and fathers for almost a hundred years is the train set. There have been toy train sets for more than a hundred years, but they were rather too costly for working class families until about the 1950's. There are still more boys and fathers wanting train sets than mothers and daughters. A decent train set will last decades and rise in value.

Number 2: a rocking horse. All children like rocking horses. Boys and girls; girls seem to retain their fascination with horses longer than boys do, in Europe anyway. This present has staying power lasting for a number of years even if it is used by numerous siblings. A decent rocking horse can be passed down generations.

Number 3: doll's houses and toy forts. All kids like to play with either a dolls' house and dolls or a fort and soldiers. A Wendy House and a tree house are in this bracket as well. You can see children all over the world building make-believe houses and imitating their parents' life.

Number 4: dolls; both sexes like to play with dolls of one kind or another: teddy bears, rag dolls, action men, Barbie and Ken and toy soldiers are all dolls

Number 5: a doll's pram is still a big favourite with young girls - imitating mum transporting her baby about. Similarly toy pedal cars, which are well-liked with young boys and young girls alike.

Number 6: bikes and tricycles are also popular with boys and girls of all ages. We appear to all have an early desire to travel at a speed faster than walking pace.

Number 7: board games have been popular for thousands of years. Roman soldiers used to play a game comparable to ludo and chess has been around for roughly as long as that as well. Nowadays, there are hundreds of other board games as well, some of which have become classics already. Some of the board games that have been popular since they were invented are: Monopoly, Scrabble, Cluedo and Risk and there are many more besides that as well.

Number 8: cards. The original games of cards were nearly all gambling games or could be gambled on, but for decades there have been children's decks of cards meant to create some children's card games like Snap and Happy Families more simple and more fun.

Number 9: shoot-'em-ups. Boys have always liked shooting. At the outset cork guns or toy bows and arrows or toy crossbows; then air guns, then paint ball and then genuine guns.

Number 10: costumes; Children like to dress up, whether girls dress in mum's clothing and boys dress as Batman; girls dress as nurses or boys dress as Superman, all kids dress up at some time or other in their lives.

To this list of more conventional toys, you can add the modern number ones like computers and gaming machines, but then they have been about for thirty or forty years already as well.

Baby Boomers As Grandparents

By Owen Jones

The children of the so-called Baby Boomer generation, those born in the twelve years or so after the Second World War, are now grandparents and one of the jobs of being a grandparent is to dote on one's grandchildren. Baby boomers belong to the wealthiest generation that the West has ever seen and that is a good thing, because all this doting is fairly expensive.

Baby boomers were lucky because their parents survived the worst war the world has ever seen and their parents knew unprecedented wealth as the world rebuilt itself after the destruction of the war. Needless to say a great deal of the wealth that baby boomers' parents were earning was spent on their children, giving them what they had never had themselves.

This meant that a great deal of baby boomers had way too much: rocking horses, dolls' prams, toy forts, train sets, dolls' houses, you name it. Nothing was too much for the generation of hope from the generation who had had nothing.

Now, fifty odd years later, those baby boomers are grandparents. But not just grandparents - the wealthiest generation of grandparents that the world has ever seen and the way things are going, the wealthiest generation of grandparents that the world will see for a generation or two to come as the Western world struggles to pay off the mountains of debt that the banking crisis cost us.

However, money has a way of burning holes in pockets and grandparents like to dote and spoil their grand kids, so grandchildren, especially young grandchildren are being given the type of gifts by their grandparents that the grandparents enjoyed themselves: rocking horses, dolls' prams, toy forts et cetera are seeing a come-back big time.

The generation in between missed out, in general, on these old fashioned toys, but look on Amazon or eBay and see what is most popular now - it is contemporary versions of the old stuff, traditional toys. One of the reasons why traditional toys are so popular is because they are timeless.

Yes, a computer is a great gift - it is both a games machine and it can be educational, but it will be too slow to run next year's games, whereas children will play with a rocking horse for ten years and then it can be handed on.

However, boomer grandparents were not just brought up on traditional toys, the Fifties and Sixties also saw a tremendous advance in science - nuclear science and the journey into space enthralled most people. Yes, it was a time of uncertainty and distrust as well because or the Arms Race with the Soviet Bloc, but that was not what most people talked about.

Music and science were the issues of the day. Flower power, hippies and a contemporary, clean, bright way of life powered by new technology. Educational toys were well-liked gifts: Lego, Meccano and chemistry sets.

Toys of this type are becoming popular as baby boomer grandparent gifts as well. Lego sells one Lego set every seven seconds of each day of each year, day and night! This is a new trend, or at least, it is a revived trend and definitely a step in the right direction. Baby boomers may not have been the best parents, but they are pretty decent grandparents.

How to Find New and Exciting Games

By Jessica Maylor

If you like games you are possibly loyal to the games you play games like Monopoly, chess, backgammon and Risk. Folks are typically not into finding out and finding out about new games but it'd be worth your time. First off, after a bit it can be uninteresting to play the same games repeatedly. Second , new games can suggest new challenges and new paths to think.

A game which is becoming quite trendy to play is the Settlers of Cattan. This combines the strategy of Risk with the dynamic nature of bingo. The aim of Settlers is to be the first to reach 10 points. One gains points for a number of different reasons and does so via the accumulation of resources. The resources come according to the roll of the dice; if you have that number in question than you receive the resource.

The game sort of snowballs as the more places you build, the more resources you are suitable for and so you may build more. The game is dynamic as the board changes ever single time. This implies you have to be flexible and adjust depending on how the board is. You can not always play the same way like you can in Monopoly. Also the average game lasts about forty five mins which is about the ideal time.

Recently, bingo has increased greatly in popularity. All of a sudden there are bingo contests everywhere and everyone seems to be having a bingo night at their house, but there are several other card and casino games which are easily as exciting. As an example, something similar to keno does not take a while to learn but is a lot of fun, particularly for female players who don't have a tendency to get into things as seriously as men have a tendency to.

In keno you've got to choose your numbers. The PC will then pick some from random. The more numbers you have matched up properly the more that you can win. One of the nice things about keno is that commonly there's a huge jackpot attached with the game so this suggests it can be quite moneymaking. If you'd like to get into the game you can learn more about it thru some of the free online keno games that are accessible.

While this is not a new game, many people do not know about mancala. This is a game of methodology and talent. It's a game which is millenia old and is in style with folk who travel thru Pacific Rim and South America. It's a complicated game and one that will take some time to get a grip on, but without doubt after you do it is worthwhile.

The same thing may be said for Perudo which is a game of dice. This is also a game with traditional origins. Perudo is a game of bluff and is a type of poker meets dice game. Folks like to play this game when they're drunk but you have to be careful as the stakes can get high so be on your toes.

The Best Chess Sets

By Tomasz Alemany

A great alternative to very expensive chess sets like gold or silver plated, are alabaster chess sets. These chess sets are very classy.

They also are extremely good looking, and they can serve as great decoration for your game room.

All throughout history alabaster has been used to create beautiful pieces of art, due to it's amazing colors and shine.

The best way to find an amazing alabaster chess set is to first understand what size of chess boards you need. We recommend anything around a 14" x 14 " board is the perfect size.

As for the chess pieces you should stick to the original pieces that come with the set. It is not a good idea to pick the pieces first and then a separate board, as they might not mix well together due to the exotic colors.

The beautiful colors that you find in alabaster chess sets is hard to compare to anything else. You will find deep and vibrant colors that will surprise you.

Be careful because as a luxury chess set, you will need to treat it will a lot of care. Even though alabaster is a stone, most people don't realize that alabaster is fragile, if mistreated it can chip or crack. So be careful with your chess set, and treat it with care.

Here are some tips to take care of your alabaster set:

Water can damage alabaster very easily and ruin its appearance, so do not use it to clean the chess set.

If you need to clean your chess set you should use a dry cloth, and also dust it regularly. If the alabaster is stained, then you could use nail polish remover to clean the area that is stained.

Enjoy your new alabaster chess set with good care it will be an amazing deluxe that will look great in any room. Who knows you might be the next Kasparov with a little motivation.

Great Old Games Are WONDERFUL!

By William Gentry

"Old Games" is a concept that brings up different things to different people. What do you think when you hear these words? Some people think of special old tournaments or sports games that were played in years gone by. Others think of those childhood games that they used to play with their friends and family members...games like tag or "hide and seek". In this article we will be zeroing in on the classic board and card games that were popular years ago (and are still played today). We will be providing a history to these games, and some trivia about them as well.

Board games (games that are played on a game board of some sort) are amongst the oldest of games. The first known game in this category was the Egyptian game of Senet, which existed around 3500 B.C. As time went on, the concept of the board game worked its way into Europe, and the various cultures embraced various board games. In today's world, with the advent of modern advertising, there are a large number of board games available for family fun. The latest rendition of these board games is "online play", where you can basically play the same game, but on a computer, often with someone on the other side of the world.

Strategy board games are a type of board games that that require a considerable amount of strategy to win. Games such as checkers and chess fall into this category. Luck board games such as Sorry, and Chutes and Ladders, require only a good "roll of the dice", and almost no strategy. Most games, such as Monopoly or Risk, require a bit of both. Having said this, if you never get a break with that "roll of the dice", if you need to incorporate strategy, any good strategy you may have goes out the window.

Classic board games are those games that have stood the test of time. They were not just invented yesterday, but have stood the "test of time". They were popular generations ago, and still hold this popularity today. Two such examples of this type of game are Risk and Battleship. They have evolved a bit over the years (such as the incorporation of the online format), but the games still revolve around the same basic strategy and game play. Other examples of games in this category are: Life, Clue, Monopoly, and Sorry.

People have been playing "old games" with cards for centuries. While the exact origin of a deck of cards is not known, it is very likely that they were invented by the Chinese around the time that they started shuffling paper money around. This would be between the 7th and 10th centuries A.D.

Around the time of the 15th century the format of the English playing cards started to appear. Documentation tells us that in an English Act of Parliament, domestic card makers were complaining that their profits were being cut by the importation of foreign cards into their markets.

Playing cards were originally both created by hand and painted by hand. This was very time and labor intensive, and meant that a deck of cards were very expensive to purchase. Since few people owned them, few people got to play card games. Popular old card games of this time period were: hearts, bridge, poker, and rummy. - 621

Monopoly Isn't Just A Game.

By Mike Gee

It seems as though Monopoly has been around forever. Who hasn't played a game of Monopoly? WE played it, our kids play it, our parents and grandparents played, everyone's played Monopoly! Remember playing as a kid? Did you understand the game right away? Did you win? Has it helped you in your business life as an adult?

Think of all the things playing Monopoly with mom actually did for us. We learned the value of money, property, taxes, jail, paying fines, winning contests, getting paid rent and of course paying rent. We learned the basics as well like counting, adding and subtracting and the concept of getting a payday. Monopoly is a great learning experience both young and old. Older folks can for sure enjoy a good game as well. Make sure not to cheat the little guys :)

Playing board games as a family is a great way to keep the kids around after or get them together before dinner. Teaching as well as entertaining. More often than not a family that boards together stays together. Unless there's a major property dispute:)

Letting one of the little guys win a game or two against mom or dad can really boost their confidence. When you were a kid remember how great it felt when you won a game against your parents. You could do anything after that. Make a special day for a special person with a game of "friendly" Monopoly.

Everyone has a board game, most of us have piles of board games we've collected over the years. If you've got a few holes in your board game collection now's a great time to pick up a few new ones. If you have folks over for the holidays or family and friends over for dinner board games can be a real blast. Most games can be had real cheap and are more than a good investment. If you're really into it you can spend a little more and get a nice edition of just about any game.

Grab some board games, some friends, family and a table. Doesn't really matter what the game is just grab a game and get to playing. People love board games. Young or old board games can create long lasting memories and great times. - 621

Everyone remembers Battleship and loves to play. More often than not a good board game can really liven up the party. Think back to when you were a kid. What were some of your favorite games? Do you remember playing board games with grandma or grandpa. I know it brings back a ton of great memories for me. Playing Yahtzee with grandma or Monopoly wit mom. Brothers and sisters can do battle without going to war. How about some family time? Board games are a great way to bring a busy family together.

Playing Clue with uncle Norman is a blast! Bunco makes a great game if you have a few folks that are willing to have a good time. Having board games around for the holidays and for the holiday company is a great idea.

Don't forget those great card games as well. Rummy, go fish, and of course Uno and Skipbo. If it's been a while since you've played, grab a game and a buddy. It just as much fun as you remember! Try it and you'll see. - 621

By Tomasz Alemany

Would you like your kids to do better in school, improve their memory, reading and math skills? Then you should look into one of the oldest games in the world, Chess.

Many famous people have enjoyed chess throughout humanity. Including scientist, artist, composers, billionaires, and many more. A few famous names that played chess are Salvador Dali, Frederic Chopin, Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton.

Is there a correlation between "intelligence" and playing chess? Many studies suggest there is.

A research study team in Texas found that elementary students who participated in a school chess club, had twice the improvement of non-chess players in reading and mathematics on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills.

However chess can also help your kids in standard testing in school. A separate study performed in Belgium, discovered that children that play chess do better in standard school tests, and show an in crease in cognitive development, compared to children that do not play chess. It is astonishing that chess can help in so many different ways.

Hundreds of researches have been published about the benefits of chess to children and their fast developing minds, these where just a few examples.

Benjamin Franklin once wrote:

"Chess teaches foresight, by having to plan ahead; vigilance, by having to keep watch over the whole chess board; caution, by having to restrain ourselves from making hasty moves".

The game of chess is fun, rewarding and very entertaining for anyone that picks it up.

All of our kids' brains need a workout that will push them to think deeper and out smart their opponents.

You should think about getting a chess set that will help your kids get better grades and have a great time while getting smarter. Our kids deserve a great future, and we can give them the skills to succeed. - 621

By Gerald C. Pasternak

In search of a demanding fantasy board game for one to five players? Then you will need to obtain Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game. This game is fine as a standalone board game, for any players with no Dungeons and Dragons experience. It might be lots of fun for table-top Role Playing Game (RPG) avid gamers.

The actual minis, tokens as well as tiles are brilliantly crafted and will very easily function as dungeon mapping for just about any home campaigns. Castle Ravenloft also can function as and entry-level experience for RPG style play, without having to deal with the myriad character sheets, statistic generation related to usual RPGs.

The premise of the game is that the master of Ravenloft is having visitors for an evening meal, and you are invited. Yet, evil lurks in the towers and dungeons of Castle Ravenloft, and only heroes of exceptional bravery can survive the horrors inside.

You will find 40 plastic heroes and monsters that are conveniently color coded by type. The heroes are a light grey, the infamous villains are a dark grey, the undead are white, the spectral undead are light blue, and the creatures are brown.

A number of tiles represent the rooms and corridors of the castle. When the characters move, more and more from the castle is exposed. You will find two hundred encounter and treasure cards. Those direct the action of the game. Particular actions and encounters are usually determined right here and when the hero is able to beat the monster he will gain both gear along with experience points.

Creating New Magic Tricks With Old Tricks

By Matthew Wong

New magic tricks are easily created by giving some twists to some classic magic tricks or principles. Take the old appearing handkerchief in decanter trick as an example. This could be converted into a new trick by substituting props other than those used in the original version. A milk bottle could be used instead of the conventional decanter. Or a whiskey bottle. Use a necktie in place of the handkerchief, or even a small collapsible snake. Or combine the milk bottle, alone, with any vanish of a flag, a handkerchief or a piece of silk wearing apparel-even a brassiere or a pair of panties.

New tricks have been "invented" with less evidence of originality than the substitution of the milk bottle for the decanter in this example. The same principle of using the thread to pull an object into view is demonstrated in Orrin's Spider Web Trick.

Notice that the thread is still used but that the background of the web helps to conceal both the thread and the pocket from which the card slides. Another important difference is that the movement of the thread is accomplished indirectly by spinning the web. That spider web trick is identical in basic principle to the old decanter trick. But Orrin substituted a card for the handkerchief. He substituted a disc decorated as a spider's web in place of the table. The thread remained.

Another important change made to the tricks is the pulling method. Originally the thread is pulled by an assistant or a counter weight. But Orrin improved the pulling by incorporating the action into another flourish action which is turning the table. The turning of the table also helped in concealing the path of the card. So the effect becomes like this: the magician display a spider figure on a web. He then turns the web and the chosen card mysteriously appears at the mouth of the spider.

We are not saying that the magician Orrin created the effect by substituting the objects like that. We are just illustrating how this principle can be used to produce an innovative effect from an old trickery.

Consider the steps in outline form: 1. The objects are changed-a card for a handkerchief, a spider for a decanter. 2. The place of appearance was changed in character. The original location was inside a transparent object. 3. The source of power was changed. Originally it came from a concealed assistant. Here the performer himself applied the Power-indirectly. 4. Instead of moving the appearing object rapidly, Orrin moves the place of appearance rapidly. 5. Absence of a suitable background originally made it necessary to do the trick at a distance. Here, a background that made the thread invisible moved the trick much closer to the spectator.

From the spectators' point of view, the two magic performance maybe very different. But in fact, they use the very similar principle in substance. - 621

A Few Points To Remember When You Buy Chess Boards

By Tomasz Alemany

Even if your first chess set was a gift or something you found at a garage sale you will probably eventually buy chess boards. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow but someday you will find the perfect chess board and buy it. You might buy a board as a gift for another chess player. You might buy a board because the one you have isn't suitable for tournament play.

One of the handiest boards to have is a roll up vinyl board of the type used in tournaments. You can get them in a variety of colors and sizes. Tournaments usually require that the squares on the board be between 2 and 2.5 inches. This means that board could be 20 by 20 inches.

This size may be a little to large for casual games in places not dedicated to chess play. Vinyl boards can be purchased in smaller sizes including the 12 inch "analysis size." These boards can be purchased very inexpensively are, durable and easy to clean.

It's important that the playing pieces be the right size for the board. If you buy the board and the pieces as a set your problem is probably solved. However if you buy them separately you can make sure the combination is esthetically pleasing by observing some simple rules. Make sure the squares are big enough that the pieces can be moved easily without bumping into each other.

On the other hand they should not be so small that they are difficult to see or they look insignificant on the board. The base of the King is what is normally measured. One general rule is to add half an inch to the base of the king to get the size of the square.

That's a very general guide and t doesn't work if the pieces are of a peculiar design which involves the top being wider than the base. If you are using elaborately carved pieces with costumes and weapons that stand out you will need a more spacious board.

Chess players are sometimes so unwilling to leave their chess practice to go out into the sunlight people begin to suspect them of being vampires. If your family has a player who is starting to look like the stereotypical pale, feeble chess nerd you may want to invest in the giant outdoor chess set. The nine foot square nylon "board" can be spread out on any flat surface. The playing pieces are 25 inches high. They can be opened and made extra heavy by filling with sand or water. Your chess fanatic can get a healthy looking tan and build some muscles without loosing a moment of chess time. - 621

Game For Fun Or Taking It Seriously

By Mark Van Diggelen

The majority of people who play games do so for fun. There are however others out there who take gaming extremely seriously. People differ a lot and as a result some prefer one way, while others may like it in a different way. What type of gamer are you?

I am part of a big family and one of our favorite pass times has always been playing games. There are however certain new members of our family who are not that crazy about playing games and it is difficult to get them to join in. with some of the games it is not that difficult to get them involved, while with others it is nearly impossible to get them to sit down with us and enjoy playing games.

When we sit down and play a big group game where everyone is laughing and it's a relaxed setting they will join us. They like the laughing and poking fun at each other. It can get really fun when you have twenty adults playing together. As long as we are playing these types of games they will join us.

Then there are a couple of games that a few of us love to play and they are much more of a serious game. With these few serious games it is quiet and thought out and no one is helping each other. It is more technical and down to a few players. We love the serious games, but we definitely find that it is easier to play the serious games when the children are quieter and there are no distractions.

One of my brother-in-laws says that he doesn't like sitting and playing in the group setting, but has found that he loves playing more focused on his computer. It really doesn't matter in which way you prefer to play games. Games are a wonderful way to pass the time and many of them can even be beneficial in a number of ways.

When playing many games you will be improving concentration, bettering your decision-making and learn how to think quickly to beat your opponents. This can then also spill over into your every day life. - 621

Wonderful Old Games Are WONDERFUL!

By William Gentry

What do you think about when someone mentions "Old Games"? Do you think about your childhood and those games that you used to play with your family and friends, games such as "hide or seek" or tag? Other people might recall some special types of sports games or tournaments that were played in years gone by. In this particular article we will be focusing on the classic card and board games, and providing a bit of background history of these games...

Board games are those games that are played on some sort of a game board (naturally enough). The first known board game was the Egyptian game of Senet, which existed around 3500 B.C. As the years passed, European cultures started to embrace the concept of the board game as well. In this modern era of marketing and advertising, there are a number of various board games that families and friends can play. The latest version of these classic board games is "online play", in which you can play the same game, but via the internet, with someone on the other end of the world.

We will first examine the world of strategy games. What is a strategy game? It is a game that involves a good strategy in order to win. Chess and checkers are both strategy games. Games such as Chutes and Ladders and Sorry are luck games, games that require only a good "roll of the dice" (a bit of luck) in order to win. Many games require a bit of both luck and strategy to win. Games such as Risk or Monopoly are good examples. One thing to keep in mind...if you don't have a good strategy, no amount of "luck" will pay off...

Classic board games are those games that have stood the test of time, and are just as popular today as they were years ago. Risk and Battleship are two examples of such games. Other examples are: Life, Clue, Monopoly and Sorry. Minor adjustments may have been made to these games over the years (such as the introduction of online game play), but the basic rules and strategy and game play remains the same.

Revolutionary "Pay Per Play" Board Game Model To Change Board Game Industry...

By Aidan Persse

PAYPER board games is a revolutionary new concept where players only pay when they play a board game. This concept requires some unique data to be downloaded and printed in order for the game to be played. A PAYPER board game enables players to play board games for significantly less than a traditional board game but most importantly provides a money back FUN guarantee if the player doesn't enjoy the game.

Generally a PAYPER board game lends itself to a printable board game, where the player can make the game with a color printer and some common board game components, however it also viable for inventors to ship or post more complex board game componentary to the player.

Board game lovers will be excited about this new board game concept because;

1. PAYPER are usually 50- 80% less than the price of a traditional board game. This is because you only pay for the games that you play and due to most components being easily self manufactured or self sourced.

2. "Pay per play" board games have a 45 Day - 100% Money Back, FUN Guarantee. In case you don't enjoy the game, you can automatically claim a refund.

3. You will be sure to enjoy our unique referral reward system, wherein after your initial purchase you can play printable board games for FREE by referring friends to purchase and play a PAYPER board game.

4. You can play our printable board games at the comfort of your own home. You just need a computer, a printer, and an internet connection and you can play the game in an instant. Save the hassle of going elsewhere just to find an interesting game that might suit you.

Current trends in the board game industry are significantly restricting the number and variety of board games that are being published. Out of my frustration and dilemmas encountered in publishing my own game Lies & Spies, I created the PAYPER board games idea. This new method to market and distribute a board game offers some unique benefits to board game inventor and enthusiast alike.

Want To Play Games Now

By Mark Van Diggelen

As things have gotten more and more difficult over the last couple of years, games are becoming a great option for entertainment for the whole family. I still remember how we used to play board games together as a family a number of years ago. In these difficult times it is also a great way for everyone to socialize with each other and get closer to each other again.

The pace of life is just hectic these day and people rarely get any time to just rest and relax, much less time with their families. There are actually a number of positives that you will find when playing games. You will not only bring the family closer together, but also keep everyone's brains sharp and save a bundle of money in the process. It might even be a good idea to introduce a regular game night for the whole family to help kill boredom.

Starting simply with card games using chores as payment to the winner makes the nights even more fun. Challenging ideas in creating who picks the game of the night, and the prize for the winner is just as much fun as playing the games themselves. For example, we drew straws to see who picked the game to play now, and mom made an appetizer menu for game time which we all helped prepare. This took the family experience to a different level and made us look forward to game night.

If you have a look at the different entertainment options out there, you must say that games come in at a fraction of the price of many of them. If you buy a few board games over a period of time you will get together a collection of entertainment options allowing you a variety of playing options. It is great fun to get a new game and learning how to play the game and mastering it. It is also a great thrill to challenge the others again and trying to beat them the next time around. Without you usually knowing you would have also had fun and given your brain a good workout.

Something which is not always obvious when playing games is that you constantly need to concentrate on reading, maths, matching and making critical strategical and logical decisions. It builds good character in all that play the games and all it took from you is to have some fun with your family. - 621

Colosseum, The Board Game

By Jessica King

The board game Colosseum allows you to compete with others as Roman empresarios to attempt to create the biggest spectacle in ancient Rome. You must use the gain from your early events to hire better actors, buy more props and run more and more spectacular shows. Improve your theatre and lure nobles and the Emperor to your event in order to build something even more spectacular ... and to bring in the profits.

There are five difference phases per round (except the final round, with only four phases). The leading player changes each round, to help balance things out. Each player is responsible for their own arena and begins with the choice of two different events. For each event you run, you need to use asset cards (which show people, props and animals) as well as ensure your arena is big enough to stage the show. You can buy, trade and sell asset cards at certain phases of the game.

The first phase of Colosseum allows you to invest as follows: 1. Enlarging your arena so bigger spectacles can be performed. 2. Getting two dice rolls by building the Emperor's Loge. 3. Getting five extra spectators by purchasing a season ticket. 4. Buying a new event card. In addition, there are five markets from which to buy asset cards and you can start an auction against your competitors in order to win them.

Next, players move nobles by rolling a die (or two dice if you have the Emperor's Loge) and they move clockwise. If you are rolling twice, you can combine or split the rolls. If you bring a noble into your arena, you get additional spectators ... and spectators are pure gold! If a noble lands on specially marked squares, the player receives an Emperor's Medal, which are really useful in later phases. For each spectator in the arena, you get a gold coin, which is scored by a marker around the outside of the board. This scoring system is typical for Days of Wonder games. The total game score is the maximum number of spectators attracted to one event; not the cumulative number of spectators.

Now the event has run and the spectators have been counted, there is a winner and loser for that round. The loser gets to pick any asset card from the winner, but the winner receives the podium, which gives them three extra spectators at their next-round show. - 621

Halloween Party Games For Kids Ideas And Suggestions

By John Smart

When you're putting together a party for kids you need to make sure you keep them entertained at all times. It doesn't matter what kind of party it is, the bottom line is you need to keep them interested. For the sake of this article I'm going to use Halloween party games for kids as an example. In reality I could use any party theme as an example because you can take a traditional game and add your theme to it. It truly is that simple.

One example is the treasure hunt. You know what they call a treasure hunt at Easter, right? If you said an Easter Egg Hunt you would be correct. Use plastic pumpkins instead of plastic eggs, hide them and have the children find them. Put some Halloween candy inside so the kids receive a prize. If you want you can also offer a grand prize for the person who collects the most.

Having several activities set up and available to take part in would be a good idea to help alleviate possible boredom. We live in a world that is much more high tech now so some games may not be as fun for kids. It couldn't hurt to have some back up activities planned.

If the kids are a little older and you want to get the parents involved you can always set up a haunted house style attraction. You can use a home or set it up outdoors if the weather permits. The parents can dress up as vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts or even some scary animals. Of course this is only something that might be beneficial for children who would understand that this kind of thing is not real. A good scare is fine but if the children are going to get really upset you might want to skip this one.

If the kids are too young or you prefer not to scare them there are some cool Halloween party games for kids that are fun and educational. There are two different ways to get your hands on these and those are by buying them in book form or just downloading and printing them out. These different puzzles and games are sure to keep the kids occupied and are great for teachers too. - 621

Settlers Of Catan

By Erin Walker

Settlers of Catan, is a board match up that in no way appears to grow old. I've played it numerous times and it's totally my favorite movie online game.

A single particular great characteristic of Settlers, is that it's competitive but not in a brutal way. In contrast to games that trigger folks to turn out to be overly competitive and mad, Settlers of Catan keeps folks engaged but not angry.

Nearly definitely one of the particularly best details about Settlers is the way every single single on the world wide web video clip online game is completely different. In contrast to games like Monopoly and Life, the Settlers of Catan board in truth changes each solitary time you play. When you commence a new video video clip video game you can follow 1 of the a number of numerous board setups shown in the direction manual, or you can just make your personal board, which is what I like to do. Of course, due to the uniqueness of the board, Settlers does take up a entire whole lot of time to set up, but it's worth it.

One more very good characteristic about Settlers is the quantity of control you have throughout the movie video game. In games like Monopoly, Bingo, or Risk, virtually something comes down to luck. Whilst the resources you get are based on the roll of a dice in Settlers, practically anything else is dependent upon what you do. What you generate, where you go and what you trade is not up to luck. Settlers is a significantly much more interactive on the web online game as well, simply because you can trade with other players.

There are also varied factors that can be additional onto the original Settlers of Catan video clip video game, such as Cities and Knights, and Seafarers. Whilst Cities and Knights can bring out significantly much more vicious competition, it is tons a very good deal a lot much more fun. Seafarers is also drastically a whole lot much more exciting to play, but does not bring any additional competitiveness. Then there are extension packs that permit additional males and ladies to play, which I've employed just earlier to. - 621

Enjoying The Agricola Board Game

By Mark Edwards

For most people, playing a board game can be a fun way to spend some time with friends or with family. It can also be a good way to have some fun. If you want to play a truly unique and different game, or if you would like to play a new game, then check out the Agricola board game. The game is available in many countries around the world, and most recently, New Zealand.

In Agricola, your job is to make sure that you have the best farm at the end of 14 turns that have passed. To do this, you need to take care of crops, livestock, and maintain many other things on your farm. You also need to have expand your family during the progression of the game. When the game begins, you only have two members. The maximum amount of members that you can have in your family is five.

Every player has a farmhouse with two rooms for the members of their family. You are allowed to take two actions during the round with these members. These actions should be used either to extend your family or to maintain and improve your farm. You can only use the action once during each round that you play. The amount of family members that you have in your farm affects how many actions you are allowed to take.

Additionally, the players are given two sets of cards. The first set is for occupations and the other set is for improvements for members or the farm in the game. These cards can be used to your advantage during game play. Overall, there are actually 139 improvements that can be made and 169 occupations. This allows the game to be different every time it is played.

As your family grows during game play, you will have more actions to take. This will allow you to gain things such as vegetables or animals. When a couple of rounds have passed, it is then time for the harvest turn. During this turn, crops can be harvested and the family can be fed. Animals can also breed for more animals. If these things are not done and the family is not fed during the turn, then it will affect the end result negatively for the farm of that player.

There are expansion packs that are available for Agricola. These will allow you to enjoy the game in various ways. It can also make the experience much different. For example, an expansion pack will allow you to breed horses or heat your house. Because of this, the game may become more challenging or easier for you to play.

Fairly recently, there has been a release of the game in New Zealand. Some of the releases of the game allowed for different game play, such as the amount of sheep that can be used. There are also different rules about harvesting in some cases. However, this did not apply to all of the sets that were released in the area.

It can be said that the Agricola board game is a truly unique experience. If you have become curious about it, then you should definitely find a copy and give it a try. You may find that it is the most challenging and interesting game that you have played in a while. - 621

How To Play Endeavor

By Jessica King

When Carl de Visser and Jarratt Gray started to create Endeavor, the board game, they might have set their sights on world domination. They certainly succeeded with it being a top-selling game and storming up the charts worldwide. Not bad for a pair from Wellington, New Zealand

Endeavor is set at the beginning of the Age of Empire and it's up to you to go forth and cover the globe for the glory of your home state. Deploy people and resources around the world to discover new countries, subdue peoples, open up trade routes and perform all the tasks of politics and conquest. With entire continents on the line, there's plenty of wealth and glory to go around. Will you create an empire? Will you be able to hold it?

Your mission starts with the creation of sea lanes, which allow access to far off countries. Or at least around the Mediterranean. Once you have reached there, it's up to you to deploy your resources wisely and make the most of every opportunity. Strategy is balanced against strength; wit against war as you endeavor to build and hold sway over your Empire. It is important to find a good combination of techniques, as there is no simple path to world domination!

Endeavor is a board game for explorers and brings out the evil imperialist in all of us! Your colonising efforts are rewarded with increased wealth, while the use of force drains away your young men and the money to fund them. Politics, Industry, Culture and Finance are the four legs that prop up your rapidly spinning globe; and without one, you're entire game plan will fail. Game play begins with setting hte shipping lanes and, when they are full, you place buildings which represent your resources. You also have people to deploy throughout your growing empire and they do special actions which include buying and selling resources, fights and negotiating. If you sufficiently increase your political skills, you are able to perform more complicated (and high value) plays later in the game.

It must be time to play! Let's find out why Endeavor has been so popular since its 2009 release ... and we'll see what prizes it wins in 2010. - 621

On Board With Ticket To Ride

By Jessica King

Train lover? Travel through the capital cities of 1800's Europe in Ticket to Ride Europe -- the board game. Complete missions, lay tracks and make use of ferries and underground tunnels to traverse the continent. In this, the second game in the franchise, there are Train Stations, Ferries, Tunnels and freshly designed and drawn cards and boards.

Pieces and gameplay which have changed in Ticket to Ride Europe are:

Pieces: Bigger, easily shuffled train cards; Stations, which are plastic pieces sitting over the trains; a wonderfully illustrated map, which serves as the game board.

Missions: Mission -- or destination -- cards are distributed at the start of the game. The longest ones are now marked separately so that you can build strategy around this from the start.

Ferries: There are plenty of waterways in Europe and a price to pay to pass them. When you come to a "Ferry" you need at least one locomotive card to make your attempt to pass.

Tunnels: Short-cut through a tunnel beneath the mountains ... but you have to pay the toll. Each time you play through a tunnel, turn up the top three cards from the deck. You must then match each card of your set colour to pass through ... make sure you have some spare!

Train Stations: Train stations are a new element in Ticket to Ride Europe. You have up to three train stations which allow you to make use of an opponents tracks. This means you can still complete missions, even if you get cut off. It does cost highly though: each unused Station gives you 4 extra points at the end of the game.

Ticket to Ride Europe is a worthy contribution to the franchise and is worthy of the many, many awards it has won. - 621

The Societal Function Of Parties

By Harold Hallmark

For years, people have held and enjoyed parties. When several people gather at an event for the purpose of celebrating a birthday or sports event for example, that is a party. Parties are ways to bring people together through music, food, dancing, and entertainment. There are many different types of parties, depending on the occasion.

While birthday parties are among the most prevalent types of parties around the world, sports parties and more relaxed nightly parties are also common. The sole purpose of a birthday party is fairly evident: to celebrate the birthday of someone who is getting a year older. Attendants of the party will sing "Happy Birthday" to the person for whom the party is held.

Sporting event parties are frequently centered around a specific sport like baseball, soccer, or football. People grill and have beer and wings at these parties. They cheer and laugh and cry for their favorite teams. Sporting event parties are very lively and energetic and celebrate team spirit.

Birthday parties on the other hand are much different, usually taking place at water parks and amusement parks for children, or sometimes just at home. Adults have birthday parties in restaurants and bars or nightclubs very often. Nightclubs make good party hosting venues, as do restaurants; in fact, many restaurants will specifically make arrangements to host a party if requested by the hosts.

Parties that happen at night for the purposes of entertainment and socialization include dance parties, dinner parties, and house parties. Teenagers and young adults get together, usually in a private home, and offer beer and dance music. Sometimes these young people get in trouble if they are too loud or disrespectful of the neighbors.

Dance parties may include raves, where loud music is played and bright colors and lights are flashed to encourage people to dance. Raves are held outside typically, as opposed to house parties.

Other types of nightly parties such as dance parties include energetic music like techno, trance, and disco. People gather at these parties to dance, drink, and have a good time. Usually people at these parties will be of younger ages between 18-28.

One last type of party is the dinner party. Usually a couple or family will prepare a fine meal for guests, who bring wine, separate dishes, and often desserts. People at these parties quietly talk and eat together. Dinner parties are more relaxed and intimate than other types of parties and usually are held for neighbors and other close friends of the people hosting the party.

Dinner parties are also popular within many countries. A family will host a party with an elegant meal where guests will bring wine and sometimes desserts. Then, the partygoers converse, eat, and socialize in a relaxed manner. Dinner parties are less formal and usually for close friends under a more intimate setting. - 621
